“O Lord my God, in You do I take refuge; save me from all my pursuers and deliver me, lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver me…”
David knew He was safe in God’s care, but he still asked for God’s intervention as his pursuers continued to come after him. He even thought that maybe it was something he had done in the past, and this was God’s way of chastising him for it. Maybe he had treated somebody wrongly, or betrayed a friend somehow, or in some way was unnecessarily violent to an enemy sometime. If, in fact, he had been guilty of any of these wrongdoings or offenses, he felt maybe the Lord was punishing him by this cruel treatment he was receiving at the hands of the enemies who were chasing him.
At times, we may be found with that kind of reasoning in our minds. We may think, as mankind has always done, that we reap what we sow. What we’re going through now must be because of the way we treated somebody in the past. We feel like we should repent just in case that’s the reason we’re going through what we are now. Then, there are the other times when things are going really well. We may really feel good about ourselves—We must have been a really good person because God is really blessing us now. That could be the case, but not always. We live in a sinful world, and sometimes things happen just because of that, maybe directly or indirectly.
We don’t always know how to look at our aliments or illnesses, or our seemingly good fortune, or bad fortune. We pray for God’s wisdom each morning and for His Holy Spirit’s guidance to help us know what is right and good in His eyes. Then we go through the day, relying on Him to guide us and help us make the right decisions, in all things, all the time. But, we’re limited in our insight, so we do and think what we feel would be pleasing to God. Then let it go. But, we are still sinners living in a sinful world. Praise God for His grace and mercy!
Prayer for today: God help us to always do what would be pleasing to you. Our goal in life is to please You. But also help us to know we are all still sinners and that we are going to suffer. But, God, we know You’ll be there for us and help us go through whatever is before us. Thank You! Amen.
