To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?

Consider and answer me, O Lord my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,

lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Life is filled with questions, some of which are beyond our capacity to answer. It seems that such a question has troubled the psalmist. In Psalm 13:1-2 he is in anguish of soul, experiencing some deep sorrow. “1How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?  2How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?”

Does God indeed forget his own? Does He hide His face from them? There are undoubtedly times in the lives of most when they feel that this must be the case. Even Jesus, on the cross, would cry out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) Yet this same Jesus, who knew the agony of the cross, also knew the glory of the resurrection.

In Hebrews 13:5 we find God’s promise, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” You and I can take comfort in that promise, just as the psalmist seems to have by the end of his prayer. “5But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.” (Psalm 13:5-6)

Let us, in the face of uncertainty and doubt, remember all that God has done. Since the beginning of our existence, He has moved to bring us into relationship with Him. He continues to work in us and through us by His Spirit. Remember, as the psalmist has remembered, that despite the broken status of this world - God deals bountifully with us.

Prayer for today: Father God, thank you for leading us to Your salvation. Thank You for guiding us in the Spirit. Thank You for Your many blessings. Help us to keep our focus on You when we face uncertainty. Give us the resolve to move forward despite hardship and frustration. Amen.
