“She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.” - Proverbs 31:14
As the wife of the household, what is your pattern for buying groceries for the family? Are you content with what you can find at only one store, or are there times when you really want to satisfy your husband and family and have to run off to another one? That’s because you want to be considerate and want to provide what others enjoy. When this was written the women would go down to the shipyards looking for some special foods that may have just arrived that weren’t available locally. They weren’t able to wait until the next truck or shipment came in. That was their only source for certain food items.
Wives and moms typically want to be dependable and worthy of what they feel called to do, and to please others. Proverbs 31:29 says, “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” You want to be a part of that group. Your husband and family should certainly be grateful for all your effort, even though it’s often expected of you, and should let you know how appreciative he is. That helps make a good marriage, one that is compatible and enduring. Don’t be discouraged, keep doing what you know is good for your husband and your family! You’ll be blessed by just knowing you are being obedient to God!
Prayer for today: God, help me to accept my role in life, providing for my husband and family, whether I feel like it or not. That I might realize how much I am relied upon, and be faithful to you and those you have given me. Amen.
